hi abby!! I am sorry to hear that you aren't doing well. Sending lots of positive energy your way!!!! So I wanted to know who Venus and Jake's favourite artists are and if they are concert-going ppl? I imagine jake gifting Venus tickets to her favourite artist and them having just tons of fun. Maybe sometimes the dagger squad tags along too. Idk if this is worded weird but hopefully you get my point. Love you!!!❤️
I firmly believe Venus is a big Lake Street Dive girl and she gets Jake into them. Like you're telling me that she and Jake wouldn't sing this drunkenly at the top of their lungs at some bar and it's the first time Venus is truly enjoying herself and showing it in front of Jake and he's just so ready to propose to her. I also see her being big into Misterwives. When Jake is on deployment, they share short little playlists as a way to remind the other that they love them and had been thinking of them. When Venus puts up this song on a playlist, Jake nearly cries. I also see her really into Janelle Monae.
Jake I can see being into country. I know it's a cliche, but I'm not wrong. He gets Venus into it, by introducing her to country's best subgenre: women who kill men and sing about it. She ends up loving Little Big Town.
But I can also see Jake growing up on classic rock and Motown. He plays a lot of Stevie Wonder when they cook.
I feel like they want to be concert people, but with Jake's schedule it's hard to plan ahead. As a result, I see them going to more local shows, basically whoever is in town when Jake happened to be back. That is how they ended up booking a semi-local band for their wedding.

Hey hey hey I don’t have Tumblr BUT I saw your post about C!Tubbo dissociation headcanons and here I am, asking for them. And possibly more C!Tubbo headcanons. Preferably angsty. Just. Any of them. Please. Thank you.
oh, a fellow starved c!tubbo enthusiast. hello there, i do have some headcannons to spare luckily, hope you enjoy!! mostly this is the dissociation ones but i have some miscellaneous ones & songs at the end for you :]
so obviously uhhh tw for dissociation/depersonalisation/derealisation in this post!!! also going to put them under the cut bc this is long lmao
oh and disclaimer: this is very much based off my own experiences with (near constant) chronic dissociation so it might be different from other experiences!! yeah.
oh ALSO this is disorganized and probably missing stuff because i am going through a bad bout of spaciness as of right now, so apologies if anything is confusing, feel free to ask for clarification!
idk background timeline stuff so it fits into the story
at first he didn’t even realize he felt disconnected from things. it started off as a coping mechanism during combat and felt so similar to the feeling of being “in the zone” he’d known before that he didn’t question it
after a bit, it spread from only being there during battle to during conflict in general. still, he didn’t mind it—it actually made arguments more bearable because they felt almost secondhand.
eventually he came to use it as a crutch so much that it became constant.
that was when he started wanting it to go away.
and then because i can’t bear to give my precious c!tubbo constant dissociation he probably gets breaks from it sometimes idk lmao
his experiences:
gaps in memory
auditory processing issues
lots of depersonalisation and not recognizing himself in the mirror (which is even more fun/terrifying if you add in shapeshifter headcannons)
a lot of the time he feels like his actions aren’t his, which helped him to feel less bad doing morally ambiguous things (spying, exiling tommy, hunting technoblade, etc)
after it all he was left with near constant dissociation almost all the time.
it nearly always feels like the world is secondhand to him and he has no control/impact (ironic considering the power he has, and he knows that, but)
often wonders if he is dreaming and just waiting to wake up from a coma he’d gotten from one of his many battles.
when things get really bad he wishes he could just wake up from it.
often doesn’t recognize his hands looking down at them, especially with the burns he has now. they’re not his hands, right? but they are. they’re his hands. huh.
uhhh examples of where it could have been shown in plot if you squint lol
for example, that famous clip of him dancing while wilbur and tommy argue in the background would be a physical representation of him zoning out (dissociating) to get out of/away from an argument.
the whole yes man thing could have either been an auditory processing issue where he replied yes to wilbur without hearing what wilbur had asked OR a gap in memory where he didn’t remember telling tommy the opposite
he pulled away for like 5 months into snowchester and talked to hardly anyone but his husband and son. dissociation is hard to interact with people during because you feel so isolated for so many reasons—sometimes you feel you’re the only real thing there, sometimes it feels there’s a glass wall between you and everything else that IS real. and even ignoring that, most people can’t relate to feeling that way, leaving you even more alone. he could have pulled away because it was too much too keep going through that (i did that don’t recommend it tubbo JSJD)
miscellaneous headcannons that i don’t see very often:
after winning a battle, his instinct is to play a disc and look out at the sunset because that’s what he and tommy always did (see his lore yesterday (june 18th)—he did it with ranboo despite tommy not being there)
i’m rather fond of my original-l’manberg-citizens-consider-haircuts-and-fixing-up-appearances-affectionate-because-wilbur-did-it headcannon so i’ll add that here—basically wilbur gave everyone military cuts and new suits and everything. and while that was just for war, it was also because he cared about all of them. ever since, they all considered fixing up someone’s appearance an act of love.
tubbo refused to let anyone cut his hair after the red festival, not trusting anyone. he would probably let ranboo do it now, only he’s rather attached to the way it hides his burns and some of his horns and keeps him warm in the freezing snow.
he builds walls like how tommy builds cobblestone towers—a reflex, a coping mechanism, a habit. he built the l’manberg walls and ever since the defense has been second nature, whether for the best or the worst.
ive been waiting forever to share these i have way too many. i pass the hours staring out the window listening to misterwives and imagining c!tubbo animatics to it and now i have a chance to share them oh my god
so without further ado,
c!tubbo animatics i have in my head:
whywhywhy by misterwives: ok this one isn’t chalked out but it has him vibes
alone by misterwives: just him and ranboo. figuring things out. helping each other heal. i legitimately have an entire animatic in my head to this lyric by lyric and could make a fucking storyboard for it if only i could draw. if anyone wants me to write out lyric by lyric what it WOULD be though feel free to send an ask aHAHHAHAHA
over the rainbow by misterwives: a montage of c!tubbo just. finally going apeshit. that would be so cathartic alright and it’s such a badass song he deserves it
it’s my turn by misterwives: pretty much any times that tubbo finally got to do something back at someone who wronged him—the butcher army going after technoblade, him yelling at quackity about borders saying “well don’t i get to put my foot down too?” the lyrics “i know you’ve got your version of the story, i’m sick of saying sorry, i’m sick of always having to explain” during his spy arc PLEASE he had to justify everything he did and the “are you happier?” comment and schlatt breathing down his neck aAAAA give my boy a break (also the instrumental uses a lemon demon-type sound which makes me think of ranboo so i love imagining a cool bee dup building the outpost montage there snhshagahffn)
find my way home by misterwives: idk the vibes just fit man
oxygen by misterwives: hhhrnggg clingy duo angst oW
i did say i spend a lot of my time listening to misterwives and daydreaming c!tubbo animatics didn’t i?
anyways yeah. here’s some c!tubbo content to help us poor starved c!tubbo enthusiasts :’D also misterwives propaganda go listen to them female led band with a fucking badass lead singer with banger songs and incredible vocals and lyrics ANYWAY
#dsmp#tubbo#dream smp#mcyt#dissasociation tw#feel free to add your headcanons btw or ask for clarification on these!!! i would love to talk abt c!tubbo with you SHJDJDJDJD#dissociation tw#depersonalisation tw#derealization tw#allyster rambles#ask#anon

Shota’s Cool Times Summer Jamz Mix
But for real, this is a Class 1-A Character Analysis, but with their music choices!
So it’s editing day, and @albinoburrito and I got a little off track. It started with, what do you think Bakugo would listen to? And then it just spiraled out of control.
So, here it is. Shota’s Cool Times Summer Jamz Mix
Izuku: Indie music, general pop, his dad’s old classic rock albums - was especially excited when he found out that All Might also listens to classic rock and uses it for his workouts. He prolly made like 20 new playlists after that and always tries to play them on the down low when All Might is training with him. He fucking loves it when All Might is like, “oh! I love this song”. Or, asks for him to turn the volume up. Has done some low fi for studies, but that’s really the only time he does it. He likes Young the Giant, MGMT, Alt-J, Strfkr and bands like The Rolling Stones and Van Morrison fill out most of his workout playlists.
Bakugo: Honestly, he doesn’t have any hard and fast preferences. If he likes things he SoundHounds them and moves on. He can cultivate playlists, but it’s not like he’s Kaminari level, having playlists for any and all activities. I do feel like he would lean more toward rap & hip hop titles. As well alt and alt rock. No fucking scream-o, or Eminem, please and thank you. Artists like: Childish Gambino, Travis Scott, Drake, blackbear, Missio, NCT 127, and Jaden’s Icon. However, he does have one low key, wind down playlist with sad, sappy songs that he had to immediately lock when the others found his Spotify. Shit like Band of Horses, Lord Huron, and Ocean Eyes by Billie Eilish.
Sero: Indie and indie bops: i.e. Loud Pipes by Ratatat. Some rap & hip hop. Maybe upbeat alternative jams. He strikes me as a Gorillaz fan. He’s good at making playlists, he’s better at the low key ones. Things that you can comfortably listen to and don’t mind them. He doesn’t overthink this. If you hand him the aux you’re never upset. You’ll get bands like: Two Door Cinema Club, Passion Pit, St. Lucia, COIN and Coast Modern.
Kaminari: The KING of cultivated playlists. Like, has one for every occasion. Need something for a party that your parents will also attend? Cross generational? He’s got you. Pump up jams for specific people? He made them like a week ago and has choices. Makes playlists for certain people, but won’t give them out unless you actually want them, or ask him. Yes, he made one for Shinso after that training battle. No, he hasn’t worked up the courage to show him yet. Personal preference: he’s into all the latest pop & he keeps up with artists and tends. For upbeat playlists he goes for: Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Maroon 5 and Major Lazer. For low key playlists his go to are: NIKI, Khalid, KALEO, Transviolet, Noah Cyrus, and Bea Miller. His favorite artists waffle. They change rapidly. He loves them one week, but next week he’s got a new fav. He also likes the Jpop scene.
Mina: Hip Hop QUEEN. If it’s got a good beat she is all over it. MUST be a banger. She has mood banger playlists. Like, Kamanari, she’s got some good playlist cultivation skills. She’s also who you want to go to for road trip & sing along playlists. My girl loves a good upbeat “friendship,” playlist. She has a soft spot for some indie bands, i.e, MisterWives, Lorde & Billie Eilish. For her everyday listening needs she is all about: Run the Jewels, Lil Nas X, Quinn XCII, Logic, Calvin Harris, Nicki Minaj and Bhad Bhabie.
Jiro: She listens to all most everything. Massive, massive music pallet. Her family was always big on diversifying her musical tastes. Never let yourself be limited or judgmental because it’s not what you usually listen to. That said, she super big into rock and alt rock. She really like to follow bands. Like Paramour, Panic at the Disco. Bands that have shifted and changed over time. She admires that skill. Jiro cultivates playlists that are super specific and poetic. You know, those concept playlists that are like: enchanting, serene. You are laying in an abandoned castle and you’ve never felt this content and at peace. You are one with the universe, never in your life... Like that shit that’s like a paragraph long and you don’t even understand why, like, why is it so long? And so, specific? She’s got that shit locked down on Spotify. Mina found hers once, ONCE, and she tightened that security seconds later. She loves to listen to: Fleetwood Mac, The Zombies, Joni Mitchell, Terror Jr, Woodkid, Foo Fighters and David Bowie. Literally, she likes everything. Equal opportunity music listener. If it feels good it’s going in a playlist and that playlist is turning into a poem.
Tokoyami: 100% listens to GOTH rock - POST PUNK jams. Don’t @ him. It’s just his vibe k? Siouxsie and the Banshees shit, The Cured, The Smiths, and some good ole’ Evanescence. The darker the better, Revelry in Dark y’all. He’s a sucker for rock opera, that epic extra shit, but it’s also low key embarrassing. He wants no one to know of this. Like if you find it, go away and leaf him alone. Also, never speak of this again. He’s redacted, he’s not even on this list. You didn’t see this.
Iida: Oh my king, he likes some of that Bastille, Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, One Republic in his playlists. Low key, alt rock. Good ole’ safe, alt rock. But, he does like some pop songs. Not that he will talk to you about that. When he’s with his folks he likes to masquerade as a classic rock buff. But he’s bluffing pretty hard. He’s working on that with Izuku. He’ll get there you guys. He knows his brother loves it so he’s trying his BEST. For his pump up work outs he does go for that DAFT PUNK techno.
Aoyama: Oh. My. God. He loves flashy bands. Fucking Glam rock all the way. He’s also super, super up to date on the French hip hop and pop scene. Into people like Yelle, Phoenix, Soprano, Ayama Kamura, Stromae. Loves ELO just for the sheer operatic value. ABBA all the way baby. Anything exciting and anything that makes him feel invigorated. His playlists are a little scattered. He really just tosses whatever he’s vibing on in them.
Kirishima: You already know, why are you even looking here? He’s got the manliest playlists. When he was younger it was like, all alt rock, edgy stuff. Once he got to UA he cleansed that pallet. Not that he don’t go back to those playlists sometimes, but he’s also wanting to move on from those feelings. Now? He’s all about that positive rock babyyy. Anything that has a good, upbeat feeling he’s down for. He’s really looking for those VIBES. Things that get him pumped up and ready to go. Bands like: The Bleachers, The Mowgli’s, Banners, Jukebox The Ghost. Just real positive stuff, man. He also dips into classic rock for his workouts. If he feels like that rap song works with his workout jams it’s going in and he’s cranking it up. He totally found Bakugo’s sadboi playlist and immediately told him, hey, man, I have one of those too, emotions amiright? This is why Bakugo private locked his entire account HARD. Look what you did, Kirishima, you can’t see ANY of it now.
Uraraka: My girl likes pop. That bubble gum shit. But, she’s also has a superrrr hardcore rap playlist for her workouts, like, it’s kinda confusing. Mina found that playlist first and was like ????? I-Is this you? Like this playlist has DMX, Jedi Mind Tricks, Kanye, LL Cool Jay, A$ap Rocky, like, some tunes that get her GOING. But, she loves that cute Jpop and Kpop. She’s got tons of road jam playlists. Those you can put on and everyone is like, ooooooh, this song!!! She’s also has like 3 Disney playlists, for different moods. She also loves Girl in Red, Louis the Child, Hailee Steinfeld, and Mitski.
Todoroki: He...doesn’t have much experience with music cultivation. Like, he knows some songs, he didn’t live under a rock, but he also kinda did...so, that stunted him, in more ways than one. Thanks Endeavor. But, thanks to his classmates, he is starting to get the hang of this. He over thinks this stuff. Like, this music must speak to him. From Iida he likes Bastille, from Uraraka he likes King Princess, From Izuku he’s learned to love Grizzly Bear, and he really, really likes the playlist that Kaminari made for him. He’s leaning heavily on it to find some more tunes for his own small collection. He also learned that he loves anything that is hard rap as well. Especially if he can play it in front of Endeavor. You know, the ones are like, you didn’t fucking pay your child support, you ass. That aggressive, angry rap: Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole, 21 Savage and Montana of 300. It’s to make his father as uncomfortable as he possibly can be.
Tsuyu: Fucking rainforest and ambient noises. Not really, but also actually. She likes calming sounds, ok? Everyone was like, this is a joke, don’t be ridiculous and then she showed them her playlist of rain sounds. I mean, you go girl. But really, her collection is mostly pop songs, she likes them easy going. Much like her fighting and hero style, she is the glue that holds things together with the class in terms of music selection. Kinda of the bridging gap. Music that you just can’t complain about. Besides, why would you? What’s wrong with you? It’s Froppy. She and Uraraka often find themselves overlapping on their upbeat indie pop playlists, stuff like: Sara Bareilles, Oh Wonder, Kygo, Kero Kero Bonito, Taylor Swift, MARINA, and Regina Spektor. She did find Uraraka’s rap playlist and didn’t....approve. Did not want to use it for their joint workout. No, thank you.
Ojiro: Oh, you don’t get enough screen time son. You really don’t. He’s very low key. Into some indie stuff, like: Lumineers, Local Natives, Morningsiders, Manchester Orchestra, Vampire Weekend. He likes acoustic sounds, really down to earth. Once again, you cannot complain whenever he gets to select the music. Izuku especially approves when he plays his music because he always finds something new. For his workouts he prefers some heavy, heavy rock. You know, when you get to wail the shit out of stuff with your tail. He’s playing that Five Finger Death Punch in his MIND.
Koda: Nature sounds. Honestly. Full. Stop. Dead-ass he is living for artists like Corrine Bailey Rae, Hozier, Alesia Cara, Adele, and Maggie Rogers. He’s also got that Kacey Musgraves and Florence + The Machine on LOCK. Anything that feels ethereal and light is right up his alley. He likes it a little spooky sometimes. He does have a killer Halloween playlist, but he hasn’t ever quite worked up the courage to play it for his classmates. Oh. Also, listens to Enya un-ironically. He also might have a repeat problem with Imogen Heap’s Hide and Seek.
Sato: He’s into new bands that I don’t even fucking listen to. He loves him some alt rock too. But, he’s not above that classic rock. He just likes stuff that he can head bang to. Not a metal head, but low key IS a metal head. Stuff like: Arctic Monkeys, Bring Me The Horizon, Highly Suspect, Royal Blood, The Smashing Pumpkins. He also has a wonderful baking playlist. Like 1950’s crooners. Think Dorris Day, The Ink Spots, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, and Frankie Valli.
Momo: Classical. Moving on. But really, she loves a good brain playlist with musicians, cuz they aren’t artists to her, they have a specific name for the work that they do: Bach, Debussy, Beethoven, Strauss, and some Tchaikovsky...some of his stuff is too much, even for her. She is starting to broaden her tastes. She really loves Sato’s baking playlist, those 50’s and 60’s beats are right up her alley. Jiro is slowly getting her to try out some pop and low key alt rock bands too. She’s growing and learning, y’all.
Toru: POP. That Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera MOUSE CLUB STUFF. She likes sing-alongs. Like has 20 Disney playlists and is always, always down to do a Grease playlist. You honestly feel attacked by how upbeat and peppy her playlists are, ATTACKED BY A GOOD TIME. It’s teen bop pop all the way here folks, no need to dig too deeply into it. She likes: Lizzo, Beyoncé, T. Swift, but like, leans into her hard, she is a swifter head, or whatever it’s called...Arizona, Carly Rae Jepson, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Harry Styles, Katy Perry, and Kesha among the millions of others.
Shoji: This guy. He loves him some alt rock. He, like Ojiro, needs more screen time. He likely listens to lofi playlists fully. Like, not in the way Izuku just listens to them when he’s studying, but like, for fun. Like he actually GETS them, you know? He likes bands like: Cage the Elephant, Beck, Broken Bells, Modest Mouse, The Killers, Neon Trees and Grouplove. For real tho, he needs more screen time.
Aaaaaaaand Mineta: He needs less screen time. Thank you your honor, I rest my case. Um, but like, he’s down for that dirty rap. Like, the slimier the better. If it’s ass, money, pussy, he’s on it. Big Sean is his hero. He thinks the Weekend is the best singer known to man. If this upsets you, I am sorry. I love him too, but sometimes we gotta face the truth. Mineta loves, loves, loves the Weekend. He’s also super down on the Megan Thee Stallion train. Oh, and Cardi B too. He also likes Tyga and Sage the Gemini. These are his top pics. His current ringtone is WAP and Aizawa nearly snapped his phone in half when he heard that go off in his classroom.
Bonus:
- Aizawa: Yes, he has heard WAP. He’s literally attached at the hip to a dj and you know Midnight and Present Mic were all over that song when it was released. Those two tried to do that tiktok choral rendition of it. It didn’t go well. But seriously, this man likes a little bit of everything. He’s a no-fuss, low key guy and his music tastes are the same. He likes alternative and indie the most. Some of that: Sylvan Esso, Silversun Pickups, The Black Keys, The Flaming Lips, The Strokes, Cake, Incubus, and the Deftones. While he has no time to cultivate playlists, he does have a grading playlist that he quickly threw together. It helps him to zone in and work. Yes, Present Mic likes to add funky shit to it, just to ruffle his feathers. In the worst universe, slash in THIS universe, Aizawa was too lazy to get his own Spotify and he shares one with Present Mic. That poor algorithm has no idea what to recommend. He’s just waiting for that cease and desist letter from Spotify’s fraud department. Any day now.
Alright! Hope ya’ll liked it. Lemme know if you want more. We kinda started on one for the LOV, but it’s not finished just yet. In other news, we WILL edit the new chapter of “Look Upon the Light” tonight, don’t worry, we’ll be good. It should be out in the next few days.

hi i was tagged by @navollidiot to put my music on shuffle and list the first 20 songs that play!!! im gonna kinda copy leaf and do my top songs 2016-2019 and im gonna try to avoid repeating artists/themes!!!!! ty leaf this is exactly what i needed to do after finishing my finals ily (also enjoy my commentary cause i cant not say things)
juice - lizzo (okay i definitely had one of those “listen to a lot of lizzo and love yourself” summers and lizzo hypes me up unlike no other artist seriously....)
crush - david archuleta (okay okay....so a lil backstory on me i had a roommate for three years who is also like my best friend we are basically soulmates but ANYWAY me and them tried to make this song our most played song of 2018 but i also loved it as a kid and this song SLAPS)
the gospel truth - hercules (guys this movie is so underrated and this song is so good in particular and “HONEY YOU MEAN HUNK-ULES” is an iconic line)
wrong way - sublime (lmao so in 2016 i went through a phase where i tried to listen to different types of music and idk why but this song stuck)
dont wanna fall in love - green day (haha so yeah i listen to a lot of green day and this song may have vaguely inspired a certain fic of mine.........)
everybody wants to rule the world - ninja sex party (okay im a HUGE nsp and gamegrumps fan and i listen to their cover alubums....frequently)
american pie - don mclean (i mean idk dude im a white american and this song is fun to play on guitar ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
arabesque - samuel r hazo (its honestly hilarious that this came up this was just a super fun song i played in band yes im a band kid like one of those band kids but i am proud of that fact)
deepthroat - cupcakke (this is something me and my friends would listen to a lot but somethings going on with cupcakke im worried about her...)
pynk - janelle monae (yall i could go off about janelle monae for LITERAL hours i watched dirty computer for the first time in a fucking gender utopias class and it really just rocked my entire world and specifically this song?? iconic)
finish her! - aja (im a big fan of drag and im an extremely critical viewer of ruauls drag race, but aja is radical and WAY more than drag race at this point)
the schuyler sisters - hamilton (i am also a giant big loser theater nerd and really loved (still kinda do ngl) the music from hamilton and i saw it in 2016!!!)
hawaiian roller coaster ride - lilo and stitch (okay one of my fave all time kids movies makes me feel LOTS of things and this song is just so GOOD)
love shack - the b-52s (okay this is probably one of my top 3 songs i dont know WHY it just hits me right and its such a bop you cant not sing along)
reflections - misterwives (this song just has a very specfic energy and vibe to it and i heard it the first time and i just loved it?? once the chorus hits i like JUMP)
heirloom - sufjan stevens (one of my fave artists, one of my fave songs of his, honestly just so good, like?? how can he do that???)
pillow talking - lil dicky (okay so me and my ex used to listen to this stupidass song all the fucking time, and now i know all the words and i hate it sdfgsdf)
suburbia - troye sivan (lmao leaf im copying you but highkey this might be my fave all time troye song?? hard to say but this one just hits harder)
boasty - wiley (only druck song im allowing here just cause WOW this song fucking slaps hard and i cant not move when i hear it thanks druck)
rose-colored boy - paramore (im not necessarily a big fan of paramore but this song and a few others of theirs are just super good and boppy?? idk i like it!!)

Favourite genre of music? Why?
I listen to mostly Indie/Alternative/Modern Rock or pop(Are those three all the same thing? Maybe. But I don’t know.) That or I’ve really started getting into 80′s music since Aaron posted 1986 😂
I know you didn’t ask about an in-depth explanation but I’m going to give one anyways :)
Growing up I never had a genre that I was really into. I would just always listen to whatever was on the radio. My parents never played music around the house, for whatever reason despite my dad being into rock, with bands such as ‘Cheap Trick’ and my mom loving Bruce Springsteen. So over time I just had to develop my own love for a genre, which I didn’t figure out until I was 20. I was just on my way to class in the morning, after hearing either “Stressed Out” or “Ride” by Twenty One Pilots. For whatever reason I just decided to skip class because I wanted to actually look into a band(Priorities, right?), so I listened to more songs and watched interviews and fell in love with how humble they were, and how passionate they were about what they were doing.
So what did I do?
I bought a concert ticket and booked a hotel for Sioux Falls, SD. Which is four hours away from me. At this time I had never been to a concert before, let alone had gone anywhere very far away from home by myself. (I went to Germany in 2012 on a class trip but that’s a different story for a different time)
It was honestly one of the best experiences of my life and that’s when I started actually looking into and listening to other bands like Fall Out Boy, and Panic! (Who I obviously listened to because they were popular, but I had never sat down and listened to ALL of their music.) but it also got me listening to The Killers, and other artists from the early 2000′s.
But from Twenty One Pilots themselves I had really gotten into bands or artists such as Vinyl Theatre(a personal favorite of mine), Vesperteen, MisterWives, and Jon Bellion (As they’ve all toured with them at some point).
And to finally get back to answering your question, I just like it all because it’s can still be somewhat upbeat, but will have a heavier sound to it, or it can just purely be slow and sad, and a lot of them have really good messages within their songs. It’s weird because honestly I don’t really have a “great” reason as to why I like the genre because I like how it sounds but I guess I have a lot of memory with travel or concert associated with it, the music always seems to speak to me and most of the bands within that genre are very humbling and kind people.
#tgmt ask#theobligatedklutz#this was so much longer than it should've been. I'm sorry#But I like writing okay?

3-10, 17, 24 for concert asks ! 💫💖
ooh thanks you!!
3. Which artist/band have you seen the most live? this feels embarrassing almost but the canadian tenors? now called the tenors but i ignore that bc i want to highlight their canadian-ness. i’ve seen them at least 5 times now??
4. First concert you went to? shania twain’s up tour in december 2003 :’))) i’ll never forget bc avril lavigne had a concert the same weekend so everyone my age’s first concert was one of those 2
5. Last concert you went to? i can’t believe it but possibly antti tuisku last year??? have not been to many recently at all!!
6. What is your next concert? well that last answer upset me so now i gotta get tickets for something!! either the 1975 in april, or passion pit in may…
7. Which artists/bands would you love to see live? hmm maybe sia? i feel like she would be great live. or neon trees would probably be fun!! also i don’t know that many of his songs but i bet mika would be amazing too
8. The farthest you’ve traveled to go to a concert? i’ve gone to seattle which is about a 4-hour bus ride away for two concerts! once for fall out boy (wooo) and once for this band call misterwives but mostly because i wanted to see the opener, vinyl theatre
9. Best opening act you’ve seen? haha goes well from the last question! definitely vinyl theatre, they’re a small band but i listened to a lot of their songs while travelling and i love them a lot.
10. Worst opening act you’ve seen? omg also in seattle, jaden smith opened for fall out boy.. i don’t want to call him the worst but i definitely did not understand his music at all
17. Funniest concert memory? ummm my first real concert after shania twain, i was about 15 and i went to see this christian rock band with my sister and she wanted to mosh at the front and i got overwhelmed so we had to get pulled out by the security guards and my pants almost fell down because they were loose i guess?? amazing. but also at that concert i met the opening band who was v famous in christian youth circles and they have a song played on the ukulele and i brought my ukulele (by that i mean my mom sat in the arena hallway with my ukulele) and i played that song with them….. the cursed video is out there somewhere… and they also signed the ukulele…. i sure did some odd stuff when i was younger
24. Least favorite concert venue? i feel very strongly about this, the university of bc has a stadium and its an absolute garbage venue!!!!! i saw both bastille and the killers there and the acoustics are so so bad, it upsets me. if you mess with the killers than you don’t deserve to exist as space for music

2018
Somehow I went into 2018 with a clear head and clear mission and I ended it super unsure of myself, of everything. It’s always easy to look back and see the good; I say this every year. And I certainly have had some amazing things happen this year, but this time around I see those as distractions to the cloud of sadness, uncertainty, and anxiety that’s been over head all year.
I’ve let my imposter syndrome eat me alive...and I’m not sure what to do about, it’s persistent despite having achieved a lot. This year I designed merch for a handful of bands (no one that I really listen to) but exciting none the less. Knuckle Puck sold my design at the last Warped Tour. I got to see kids walking around wearing it which was surreal (now I look at it and feel disappointed I didn’t make something better, haha). I designed for Chloe Moriondo, Tiny Moving Parts, Remo Drive, The Spill Canvas, Save Face, Otherways Music, and the biggest; a music video for Sleep On It. That one is the craziest to me. Like really crazy. I hope in 2019 I get to work with some of my dream bands.
I went to something like ~55 shows which means i spent like 1/6th of my nights in sweaty venues singing along to songs I love. Some bands I’ve wanted to see for a while and finally got to see this year were Taking Back Sunday, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Andrew McMahon (I saw him open for panic but this was a full, unique set), and Hozier! Hozier was really special. I also photographed 15 shows! So I did fulfill that resolution of shooting more shows; I’m really proud of the photos I’ve taken. I also interviewed New Politics and there’s a clip of me talking to them on Alternative Press. I saw The Wonder Years a lot this year, and saw so many friends and screamed with so many friends. Some other super memorable shows were Hinds, SOTC, Boston Calling, Misterwives, All Time Low, the final Warpeds.
The first few months of this year feels like multiple life times ago, I can barely remember, or I look back at photos and think, oh there’s no way that was in 2018. I think this summer is the split. This summer was the glowing light of this year, the only redeeming part. At the beginning I traveled to Boston and Philly for music. I turned 21 and had an iconic emo night party in a Brooklyn airbnb. And kissed someone you all know from this site lmao wild. But I had a good ass time, a rarity on my bday. Then I flew off to Nashville. I hope everyone gets a chance to live with their best friend for a summer. I had a lot of fun + made the most of the week a flew home and photographed Taylor Swift at Metlife. Heard a lot of music, had lots of trips to Dozens, lots of margaritas, lots of walks on broadway and the pedestrian bridge.
And then the summer ended and I had to go back to Pratt. This past semester was horrible....really unbelievably horrible that I don’t even want to get into it. Like I don’t even know who I am anymore. But there was independent publishing, and the radio, and I made friends who I love a lot. I hope we get closer + don’t lose touch when we all Escape in a few months.
My favorite day of this year was when Dylan drove through Nash and Dan, him, and I went to Cummins Falls. We started the day with pancakes, hiked through water for a bit, saw the falls, lost Daniella’s keys, and drove home. The drive home was just one of those perfect moments, you have your bathing suit on under your clothes even though it’s still a little wet, and your hair is a mess, and air is balmy and warm, the sun is setting on the road ahead of you, and the Killers are playing, you’re a little tired, but don’t want to fall asleep and miss a minute of it. Then we got Thai food and had to make a copy of the house key for Dan at Walmart.
I want more moments like that in 2019, at the very least.

1000 Albums, 2020: Top Tracks #50-26
Hey folks! After the fun and excitement of counting down my top albums of 2020, I'm launching straight into my top tracks. Today, we're counting down numbers 50-26, which will leave the Top 25 as a Christmas present from me to you tomorrow. I don't know exactly how many tracks I've listened to this year, but I conservatively estimate more than 12,000, which puts these tracks in the top 0.4% of all the music I've heard this year. YouTube versions of the songs are included where possible. I belatedly discovered that I can also embed Bandcamp links as well, which is probably a better option, from a "supporting artists" perspective. If you stumble upon something you like, go buy it on Bandcamp. Apologies if the video clips for any of these are wildly offensive—I have not at all vetted them before embedding them. Enjoy!
50. L.E.J. - Pas Peur (French chamber folk)
youtube
I’m starting off this write-up with this excellent bit of folk—a sultry chanson, backed with low strings that develop into a full little chamber ensemble. I’m perhaps demoting this down to a fairly low position because I heard this track as a single, and was thrilling in excitement for the release of their album, which consisted of this song, and a whole bunch of songs that sounded nothing like this song. So it’s a standout, but it’s not necessarily a sign that L.E.J. is an artist I want to follow in general.
49. Avec Sans - Altitude (vapor pop)
youtube
When I first heard this track, I loved it a lot, especially the contrast between the restrained, almost plinky verses, and the smash of drums and synths which mark the start of the chorus. The rolls of the hihat and the fuzzy synth bass are overt and intense and I love it. Overall, it ended up not quite being of the same depth and character as many of the tracks above it though.
48. Trixie Mattel - Malibu (pop rock)
youtube
Trixie Mattel is such a fascinating artist, and she’s a genuinely great songwriter too—far outstripping most (all?) of her RuPaul’s Drag Race cohort. This is a great bit of pop rock, the kind of thing I absolutely groove along to and sing at the top of my lungs (at least until we get to the falsetto swoop in the chorus). I will absolutely keep following Trixie Mattel’s career as long as she’s producing music.
47. Beans on Toast - Logic Bomb (jazz folk)
youtube
The top track from Beans on Toast this year is this jazzy number, performed with his new full band, and filled with pessimistic predictions about the fall of the world through the computers we depend on. I’m far more sanguine about the world he describes, so I’m left to enjoy the groove and the gentle horn riff which launches each new doomsaying verse.
46. Nelson Kempf - Family Dollar (art folk)
youtube
A long, slightly meandering adventure in avant-garde folk, with Kempf’s conversational lyrics, found sound recordings like announcements at an airport, and the persistent presence of gently struck marimba or xylophone. It’s a great piece of music, although it’s also one which is hard to think about as a catchy tune—it’s certainly not something that gets in my head all that much, which is probably why it’s languishing a bit in the 40s. But every time I’m reminded of it, and listen to it, I do enjoy going through it again.
45. Marcelyn - Guilloteens (experimental folk rock)
youtube
I switched from Google Play Music (shutting down, of course) to Spotify about half way through this year, and as a result, my Spotify end-of-year list was jank, missing anything from the first half of the year, and lacking much of my revision listening. I say all of this because of all the songs I’d heard since switching, this was apparently my most listened-to on Spotify. It’s certainly not a bad song, and it’s a song which won Track of the Week the week it came out—but it’s also languishing in the mid-40s on my end of the year list, so it’s not genuinely a standout. But it is very solid, especially the shifting vocal harmonies from an evocative chorus. It’s certainly a song which makes me keep an eye on Marcelyn in the future.
44. Little Big - Hypnodancer (funeral rave)
youtube
It’s one of the great tragedies of 2020 (you know, along with all the sickness and dying) that there was no 2020 Eurovision Song Contest, because Little Big, progenitors of the hardstyle analog “funeral rave” were going to represent Russia. Which possibly would have been one of the only times I would have been cheering for that country come voting time. Anyway, the song they were taking to the competition was not this one, but another called UNO. But this is better, capturing the pop aesthetic into a hard 90s underground techno beat. Maybe we’ll get to see them again in 2021.
43. Walk Off The Earth feat. Harm & Ease - Toxic (eclectic pop cover)
youtube
Prolific indie pop coverers Walk Off The Earth have seemingly come up with a neverending stream of singles this year, none of which seem to be obviously pointing to a new album—especially given that their last album (my #2 album of 2019) was released towards the end of last year. But I keep listening to and enjoying their fun cover versions. This one, done with philosophical stablemates Harm & Ease builds into a great, raucous singalong version of one of the millennium’s pop classics.
42. Stormzy feat. Aitch - Pop Boy (grime)
youtube
I’m very conscious of the general lack of hip hop on my end of year list. It’s a genre that I think is ill-served by its most prominent examples currently. Kanye, Lil Uzi Vert, Drake—all have an extremely thin production quality and a drawly delivery that lacks the rhythm that really helps the style. But grime (and UK rap more generally) seems to get the point of what makes the style worthwhile. With a kicking beat, rhythmic delivery that lands its rhymes beautifully, Pop Boy is probably the best bit of grime this year. Stormzy and Aitch trading flows is genuinely fun to watch. I’m also glad that I have a new grime favourite after its Godfather outed himself as a raging anti-Semite earlier in the year. Stormzy seems pretty chill by comparison.
41. The Fratellis - Six Days in June (pop rock)
youtube
The Fratellis are a band who are absolutely rocking the late era of their career. Their 2018 album In Your Own Sweet Time was an absolutely cracking set of music, and if this lead single is anything to go by, their 2021 album is going to be similar. Swinging in 6/8, and with a horn section to add something of an orchestral sound to their accessible pop rock, this is a great track.
40. MOBS - Big World (80s pastiche pop)
youtube
These guys did an amazingly fun album this year, taking a broad kind of funky electropop and embracing all of the biggest 80s tropes. This one leans on the synth horns, and some working synths that you just know have the black and white keys reversed. It’s a jumpy, poppy, danceable track—one of the ones this year that’s most likely to get me grooving.
39. The Lemon Twigs - The One (alt rock)
youtube
A great piece of music (albeit one from an even better album), this is almost a kind of throwback alt rock—it has elements of the 80s to it, more poppy than the Cure, but maybe containing a similar kind of theatricality to it. It’s very happy to swing between high tenor vocals and squealing guitars for its drama. But on top of everything, it’s just a great bit of pop rock.
38. The Cuckoos - Weekend Lover (glam rock)
There’s something that you’ll likely see over and over again in this list, especially if you listen to the tracks and look for similarities. And it’s a driving, perhaps slightly repetitive riff in a pop rock song. This has a great one, incorporating bass and synths, and working in counterpoint to the straight up percussion line. It’s something of a formula that works really well for me, and you’ll see it a number of times on this list.
37. MisterWives - It’s My Turn (indie pop)
youtube
MisterWives are absolute stars of the music project. In 2017, the last time they really released much music, they had my #1 song of the year for Machine, and also took out #3 on my albums list. This year’s album didn’t do quite as well, but it’s hard to deny there are some pop bangers on it, like this one, their top entry this year. It’s a lot of fun, with manic, colourful energy. Sure, it’s not a #1 track of the year this time around, but I defy you not to have some fun with it.
36. Sammy Brue - Pendulum Thieves (alt country)
youtube
A fabulous piece of country rock, about stealing a bit of time back—maybe you want an extra minute with a lover in a perfect moment, or maybe you want to take back a fight. It’s nicely done with an anthemic chorus and some harmonic slide guitar in the background. Great piece of music.
35. TheFatRat feat. Laura Brehm - We’ll Meet Again (pop EDM)
youtube
Just a great piece of dance music. It has a great riff that evokes other classic dance numbers from the past 10 years like Clean Bandit’s Rather Be, throwing in a bit of grunty wobble bass for good measure. It’s short and sweet and catchy, and I like it for that.
34. Starbenders - Holy Mother (glam rock)
youtube
A track that came out of nowhere the week it was released, because I didn’t overly love the album. But this is just a full-throated bit of stomping glam rock that I couldn’t go past it for song of the week. Incidentally, Sam liked the album a whole bunch more than me and we ended up both giving this particular song a nod. It’s just a raucous, fun bit of music with a singalong chorus I often find myself headbanging along with.
33. Minh Beta - Let’s Fight COVID! (Vietnamese coronavirus pop)
youtube
Absolutely one of my iconic songs of 2020, this is a straight up pop banger released as a PSA by Minh Beta about the best ways to stop the spread of COVID-19 in his home country of Vietnam. It also has an excellent video clip[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSiK7U46PfA] with anthropomorphised superhero versions of things like “Wear a Mask”, “Don’t spread Facebook conspiracy theories” and “Don’t share your ice cream cone with your mates”. It’s apparently a re-skin of Minh Beta’s previous track “Viet Nam Oi!”, but we’ll forgive it for being a timely readjustment for a good reason (personally, I credit about 90% of the success that Vietnam has had containing Covid to this song). And also, it just absolutely slaps.
32. Kiesza feat. Lick Drop, Cocanina & Shan Vincent De Paul - Dance With Your Best Friend (pop)
youtube
You know this might be the highest track of pure unadulterated pop. There’s nothing subversive or quirky about this—this is just a catchy pop track. It’s helped along its path by some great rapping from Cocanina, and a bit of that laddish vocal quality from Shan Vincent De Paul with the London accent of Rat Boy and Yungblud. Just a fun bit of music.
31. Ultrahappyalarm - Messy Gyaru (happy hardcore)
CRITICAL DAYDREAM by ULTRA HAPPY ALARM
It has been so many years since I’ve heard a true bit of happy hardcore like this. It has all the things I loved about the style in the 90s, but it brings with it a complexity to the production which ensures that you can’t just immediately pick apart the tracks. This was the standout on a great set of variegated techno in Ultrahappyalarm’s EP Critical Daydream. More happy hardcore for 2021, please.
30. Saint Saviour - Taurus (chamber folk)
youtube
Instrumentally, this is such a beautiful combination of piano and strings, with cello dominant, and a set of beautifully blending folk voices over the top. Later, it brings in some soft percussion to bring it home. Hauntingly though, the repeated piano ostinato is layered with a counterpoint of vocals in the final section. It gives me chills.
29. Kate Rusby - Love of the Common People (indie folk cover)
youtube
I clearly love this song, originally a standard, but most famously recorded by Paul Young, because there were two separate covers this year which reached my end-of-the-week list of best tracks. This, however, is the better of the two. It has a soft kind of electronic folk quality to it, and Rusby’s sweet, unaffected vocals perfectly fit into the mix. I’ll admit that much of the credit for this being so high has to go to the original songwriters—the team that also wrote “Son of a Preacher Man”. TIL.
28. Seazoo - Honey Bee (indie pop rock)
youtube
A lovely bit of pop rock, clearly a genre I like, especially when it has a catchy, slightly unusual riff to it. In this case, it’s a repeated rhythmic guitar stab that plays against the snare backbeat, creating this persistent sense of rocking back and forward. The rest of the song is solid enough to keep it moving, and a late guitar solo kicks it into another geat.
27. City Mouth - Sanity For Summer (indie pop rock)
youtube
A fantastic bit of upbeat pop rock. It starts with a melodic theme, then absolutely blasts out a manic piano riff which becomes the energetic motor of the track. Mostly, it’s just catchy, energetic music that makes you want to get up and dance. We need tracks like that this year.
26. Cory Wong & Chris Thile - Bluebird (jazz-bluegrass crossover)
youtube
Cory Wong has had a really strong year this year, releasing a full album, a live album, and two paired EPs. This comes from Dawn, the lighter, brighter of the EPs, and pairs his excellent guitar work with the sublime mandolin of every one’s favourite mandolinist. This is just exceptionally virtuosic work from both of these guys, and the combination just ratchets up the quality.

(having normal food was SO great.)
14. if you were to live with your best friend in an old flat in a big city, what would it look like?* a huge mess. seriously! at least my section would. it’d probably be decorated pretty clashingly, because we all have different interests. it’d definitely be covered in flowers. and it would have lots of books! flor Gives Fan-Favorite Songs (and a Coldplay Cover) New Life in ‘reimagined’ [Q&A]
Photo: Jade Ehlers
If you have been following us here at Ones To Watch for some time now, it should come as no surprise to hear that we are quite the fans of flor. The Oregon-based quartet has an impeccable gift for exploring a range of emotional depth, from feelings of longing to heartbreak.
The sentiment is all the more pronounced in reimagined, a collection of stripped-back offerings featuring fan-favorite tracks and Coldplay’s seminal hit, “Yellow.” We sat down with the boys behind flor to discuss their musical evolution and reimagining a couple of their favorite tracks.
Ones To Watch: How did your writing process differ between come out you’re hiding and ley lines?
flor: Before working on co.yh, we hadn’t played a whole lot of live shows. However, much we love those songs and it’s in-the-box style production - (to us) lacks the organic feel that comes from performing as a band, and it didn’t get to benefit from the resources of a pro studio. So, this time around, we really wanted to lean into what we learned from touring... how to create moments that our audiences will get energized by.
Lyrically and thematically, ley lines is a little more about finding confidence, rather than exploring feelings of anxiety and introversion. Although it’s still a healthy mix of both.
Why did you choose to cover “Yellow” by Coldplay?
We had covered “Yellow” live in the past - more as a straight-up recreation of the song, but as we were working on the reimagined ep, we thought “what if we took an iconic song that has had such in impact on the world, and brought it into the world of ley lines?” The idea really excited us and we just ran with it.
Where did the idea for reimagined stem from?
One day at soundcheck, zach was messing around on the guitar playing a more laid back version of “slow motion” - we have this amazing freedom to mess with these songs however we want, so we started off with producing that idea and that blossomed into making a reimagined ep.
Can we expect more “reimagined” songs in the future?
I think it’s something that we’ll continue to do throughout our career. We always write songs, produce them, perform them, and come up with ideas for the songs after all that... so why not?
How was working with Mandy from MisterWives?
it was incredibly fun. I [Dylan] was wrapping up the production of the reimagined ep, and at the same time having sessions with MisterWives working on their new album. I decided to ask Mandy very last minute if she wanted to be a part of “yellow” and her face just lit up. She ended up knocking out the vocals in a half hour. It added such an incredible airy-ness to the back half of the song. one of the best vocalists I’ve ever worked with. And she has the most contagious laugh! hoping to make lots more music with her and misterwives in the future.
You guys are on tour now, what’s your go-to gas station snack?
If we had to pick one as a band - we all have a weakness for cheddar & sour cream ruffles.
What’s the craziest thing that has happened on tour?
On a flight to London, Kyle had the unfortunate seat next to an in-flight-fling in which a woman gave the guy next to him a handjob under a blanket... three times. Poor kyle just had to sit there. After the flight it was the hardest we’ve laughed on tour.
Who are your Ones to Watch?
Moontower, BENEE, Yoke Lore, Muna, Rivals, White Reaper.

Can you save my heavydirtysoul?(Please say you can.)Twenty One Pilots concert story, 10/22/19
As I had missed my GA Floor seat show in June at home in Cbus due to my woeful injury, I decided to buy tickets when the boyz announced their second leg and stop in Cincinnati. I mean, why not? Fangirling all over the place here. Of course, I was taking Jordan, as the summer of 2016 was the Blurryface summer and we played it out on our deck almost every night. I am secure in my vast music knowledge and boldly admit my love for Twenty One Pilots just as I do my more bizarre and obscure bands. Diversity is where it’s at, babies, ya like what ya like.
The brilliant blue October day arrived, and my preparations were made.
First, I chose a hotel north of Cinci. I had a work retreat on the south side of Columbus the next morning, so shaving off those ends saved me time.
Secondly, I told the wayward Jordan “Meet me at XXX South High Street with your bags packed at 3:30 pm.” (referring to the event space I needed to be at the day after the show.) Jordan: Huh? Where? Why? Me: Just meet me there.
Third, I called the event space to ensure I could leave a car parked there overnight.
Fourth, I packed an overnight bag with 17 different outfits. I am not sure why.
I left work and drove to the space I was to be at the next morning, and Jordy showed up VERY promptly. (Me texting her: It’s just past the bridge going over 71. Her reply: I have GPS.)
She tossed her bags in my car, locked her car up, and off we went together. She drove, as I needed to focus up with a call and verbal beatdown to A T & T and a little light bill paying. An hour and a half later we arrived at our Blu hotel in Blue Ash, freshened up, poured a Citron and G2, and called an Uber to US Bank Arena.
Our driver pulled up, we tossed our cardboard coffee cups in the trash, and hopped in. He looked back at us randomly asked, “Do you like country music?” I diplomatically and cheerfully answered, “I do if you do!” He seemed to doubt my sincerity, as he wordlessly handed me his phone. I chose a 90s alt-rock playlist and, well…. Pearl Jam’s Jeremy came on first. I believe this set the tone for the whole evening and led to my overall uninhibited abandon. Because here’s the deal—I have this thing where I have a primal need to sing Pearl Jam loudly and also in a PREEEEETY spot-on Eddie Vedder voice. I simply can’t not do it. So when I began to bellow along in my Eddie voice, Mohammed turned the radio up so loud that my ears were bleeding, as if to urge me along. Still, I sang on. (OOoooh my jaw left hurtin’, OOoohhh dropped wide open…)
Anyway, we got dropped off and headed to get food and drinks at the Holy Grail Tavern. Both Jordan and I couldn’t stop looking at our attractive server. It got so that we were laughing out loud when she whizzed past us because we (the server and me) were always accidentally locking eyes. I said, “Oh my God she’s going to think – who is this perv staring at me?” And Jordan said, “Well, *I* get to see her as she walks away and she has a great butt.” This led us to the conclusion that we couldn’t stop looking at her because we, as a species, are so used to ugly being the norm (“Have you BEEN to the BMV, Elaine?”) that we can’t stop looking at people who are attractive. We drink them in like a scarce hidden spring in a dusty desert. The server asked, “One check or two?” as soon as we finished our food and apparently I spoke loudly and with a bit of shock: “Well I am HAVING another drink!”
We chugged away and then around 7 we headed out the door. I was in a bit of a conundrum because I had already walked a great deal and I didn’t know what side of the stadium we were on, and I didn’t want to walk in circles for nothing, as BabyCalf and BionicTendon were a lil sore. Just then, (of course, because this is how things happen to witchy little me), a jolly man called from one lone open-air shuttle across the street: “Need a ride?” And how! Not only did we get a ride, we got the VIP drop off at the secret back elevator! Up we went, got scanned in, and found our kickass seats—basically 6 rows up from the floor.
Once we knew where our seats were, we went up to the stuffed and crammed hallway overflowing with yellow and camo-clad Cliquers, and made our way to a hallway bar cart. The windows behind the bar cart looked out to the open air terrace. We figured we would go out and get some fresh air rather than wait in our seats, and asked the bartender, “Can we have someone let us back in if we go out there?” She said “No, but you can keep walking around the corner and come back in the main entrance.” No problem! But was it? We soon found it was, as we wandered back up to the main entrance with our brazenly open containers and were told, “No re-entry!” by a shocked looking person who may as well have added, “You dumbasses!”
“BUT! BUT! She said we could come back in this way!” I eloquently burst forth.
The ‘who are these stupid people’ gate attendant said with some ‘tude: “Who. Is. ‘She’?”
“The bartender!” I pouted.
“You can’t have open containers either!” he parried again, noticing our drinks.
“Well what do we DO!?” I demanded, my Scarlett O’Hara inconvenience bubbling up.
He sighed and pointed. “That guy in the blazer is the manager. Go talk to him.”
Another witchy win: the plaza was empty except for the one, lone, blazered manager, talking to a cop! What are the chances he was right there? I strolled up, my drink still blatant AF, and explained our predicament.
“No re-entry,” he said.
“Oh my God! We were clearly here! We had to get in to even be here with a drink in our hand. She told us we could go out on the terrace and walk around to get back in!”
“Who is ‘she’? And no open containers.” he chided.
Amazingly, our damsel in distress act got us back in and the manager bellowed “Let ‘em through!” to all the ticket attendants, and we sailed on through, triumphant. “Comin through!” I waved my hands. Back to our seats we went!
MIsterwives opened up, and I get it, auburn-maned singer Mandy Lee has a wild falsetto that yips and yodels and leaps around, putting me in mind of Kate Bush’s vocal style. Their wavy, colorful set and lighting was bright and cheery with rainbow tones and pops of pinks and yellows. The highlight was their cover of Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts”. Ballsy move! They bopped, boogied and bounced with great gusto all over the stage and when they finished with a rollicking “Our Own House” with its zesty horn riffs, the crowd was getting into it. (Jordan and I happened to be sitting in the “Family Section” and felt chastened by the uncertain-faced teens at their first show, not quite sure how to let loose, and their basic and somewhat resigned parents – neither of which group had a drink in their hands. Jordan made several trips up and back, soaking these poor people with vodka as she sloshed her way back to her seat.)
FINALLY – the main event! The arena seethed with anticipation when the curtain billowed back and forth, sooo close to unveiling the set and stage. Finally, in a burst of red lasers and flames, Josh and Tyler appeared on the scene and ripped right into Jumpsuit, performed as a car on fire burned behind them. JUMPSUIT! JUMPSUIT! COVER ME! He screamed at the close, as we all did.
Visually, the evening was a treat for the senses. Kaledoscopic shifting colors and shapes, lasers, catwalks, a B Stage…. Costume changes and bridges, Josh Dun and his abs on full display, Tyler with his various hats and costumes and instruments, a glittering swath of twinkling lights for the gentle “Neon Gravestones” shining like stars caught in a net: The production of this tour was top-notch and stunning, allowing for a visual orgy to accompany the talent of the hometown boys. I stumbled across a line that I think puts it perfectly:
“This wasn’t a band rocking out, despite how hard Dun plays the drums. This was a post-apocalyptic rapper-hero performing songs with his drummer-sidekick nearby, in the midst of lasers and explosions.” They really do have a kind of anime’, lone-wolf kind of renegade vibe going, especially with the way their albums tend to run with storylines: The Blurryface character, and now the bishops and mysterious DEMA of Trench.
Their setlist was packed full of the goodies…. Stressed Out (“what’s my name?” Tyler would chant rhythmically.) The frenetic insanity and staccato rapping of Heavy Dirty Soul. My favorite from Trench, The Hype, or as I say “The song with the best ukulele-backed bridge ever written.” God that song is tight! They shifted stages during the end of “Nico and the Niners” and returned back on the main stage by the time Holding On To You started….. ahhhh, where Josh does his perfectly timed backflip from the piano! Lean with it, rock with it. Swoon, y’all. Tyler’s laid-bare confessions are what resonate, causing the band’s wildfire-like leap to global fame.
Something that is becoming a bit of tradition with the duo is that every show, as far as I know, has always ended with Trees. It’s a euphoric communal outpouring to close the night, everyone jumping up and down singing “LA LA…. LA LA LA LA LA LA….. HELLOOOOOOO!” It’s a soft start, a gentle and sad build, and then a sweaty screamfest at the end. PERF!
As we made our way out the doors and across the plaza, we made up songs like “My momma needs to take an elevator because of her busted tendon” – Jordan, and “OOooh but I got ma fishnet stockings on, yeahh” -Me. Jordan also stepped on my foot and I howled in pain as she knelt before with remorse, boozily patting and stroking my foot.
Sooo we grabbed another Uber, and here’s where things shifts from a normal boozy concert night to one for the books. Our dude, Dean, pulled up with the license plate that began with LGR. Our relationship began with my opening sentence: “Your license plate says LIGER, like Napoleon Dynamite. It’s a lion—and a tiger!” And bam! Merrily we roll along!
I am not quite sure how this went from polite chatter to veering off the rails, but I will condense and recount what went down as best I can recall.
Jordan: She had her achilles’ tendon repaired!
Dean: Oh, I can fix that.
(Like, totally matter of fact. Oh, I can fix that.)
Jordan: Really? YES!
Dean: Sure. We’re all made of electricity. We’re just made of electric particles and neurons. I consult all over to doctors because I fix people.
Jordan: Why are you driving an Uber?
Me: .
Dean: Don’t worry, I’ll fix it.
Me: …How???
Dean: Electricity.
Jordan: How do you know how to do this?
Dean: I’m just kind of brilliant with this kind of stuff.
OK, so, I’m kind of brushing it off at this point, thinking I’ll ditch him when we arrive at the ol’ Blu. Dean says he’s going to find a place to park and he will be right in. Jord and I get out and stand outside for a minute as we watch him drive around the corner. “Let’s just go in,” I say. “Yeah,” she agrees, “I think he left.” My brain was so jumbled with confusion I wasn’t sure what was going on. Was he actually planning on coming up to the hotel room? “Let’s get inside,” I said, relieved that he probably was just messing with us and took off.
The automatic glass doors blew open to the lobby and we walked in. Right behind us, a dude with a bag of City BBQ carryout and a gray medical-looking case followed us in.
Jordan: What’s that?
City BBQ dude: This is my (blah, blah, blah.) It uses electricity to heal injuiries. (He says a name similar to something like the Electralux El Diablo 5000.)
Jordan: She tore her achilles!
City BBQ dude: Yes, this equipment will heal it.
ME: (whipping my head back toward him): OH MY GOD!!!! MY UBER DRIVER JUST SAID THAT TOO! WHAT ARE THE CHANCES!?
Like, seriously, I am thinking this guest of the hotel is maybe a doctor in for a conference, or whatever. It was only through muddled bits and pieces clicking together in my brain during the ride up in the elevator and ending when the bbq-toting man did not go to his “room” but walked in OURS that I fucking realized…
This guy WAS MY UBER DRIVER.
Not 2 separate people, both coincidentally on a mission and willing to fix bodily injuries with a machine with the equipment on their person.
I was so confused when faced with this reality it was like I was living in an alternate universe. As I am sputtering around saying, “Oh my God, I never really saw your face in the car, just the back of your head” Dean is busily and efficiently placing electrodes on my ankles, calves, shins, even my goddamn glutes. I find myself saying, “You know, my shoulder has hurt a bit lately too” and he briskly whips my arm around and jams his thumb right where it hurts, murmurs the word “Release…..” and then slaps an electrode on my shoulder. THEN he hooks Jordan up. “Is this a TENS unit?” I ask. “Pfft. This makes a TENS unit look like child’s play” he retorts proudly.
Jordan and I are now are standing next to each other looking like inmates of The Green Mile and sizzling with pulsating electricity. Dean eats his corn pudding, yanking the current up and down based on our grunts of discomfort. My phone is in my hand at all times with the first two numbers of 9 – 1 punched in and on high alert. But as he contentedly moves on to his green beans with his feet kicked up on the table in front of him, I have to admit he looks pretty harmless.
I think Dean the Electrode Machine was in our room until midnight, giving us confident tips on how to heal, saying he could bring his machine anywhere in the world, and I finally started giving signs of get-out-I’m-tired. In a gentlemanly way, he bid us adieu, as I babbled on about leaving him a big tip. I mean, he invited himself to cure me, but isn’t his time and trouble worth something? I tipped him 30 dollars and added him on Facebook.
Jordan and I try to get ready for bed but she then runs into a couple of questionable characters and starts talking to them. The three of them are standing outside (why did we go back outside? Perhaps to bid Dean adieu, I believe.) They start cooking up plans like long lost homies. I say “Get upstairs” and take her arm. (She can be hard to manage once she crosses that line.) We get in bed. It is nearing 1am. Jordan lays on top of me crying and blubbering “Promise me you won’t ever die.” I say kindly as I smooth her hair, “I will though.” We laugh about being electrocuted by our Uber driver. I say I can’t believe he just invited himself to our hotel room. She casually says with the air of a jaded and well-worn matriarch: “Please, Mom, everybody hangs out with their Uber drivers in their hotels now.” Then she gets up again and walks out the door. I am fading fast but I manage to say, “GET BACK IN HERE! Where are you going?” I close my eyes for a minute and I open them when I hear the door open again and Jordan puts her face right next to mine and whispers in a low, clear, concerned voice:
“Mom. There is a naked man sitting in the egg chair in the hallway masturbating.”
“Huh?” I whisper back.
She repeats it.
With STRANGE AND STOIC CALM considering my inebriated and disoriented state, I pick up the desk phone. The next thing I know, I am whispering as calmly and clearly as Jordan did: “Hello. This is Room 303. I want you to know there is a naked man masturbating in the egg chair up here in the hallway.”
DEAD ASS PAUSE on the other end. Finally: “Umm, ahh, ok, I… I .. uhhh… I’ll come check it out.”
Five minutes later the phone startles me out of my slip into slumber.
“Hello?” I answer.
“He’s gone.”
“Gone?”
“Yes. The man. No man.”
“Okay.”
It is 2:30 now and I don’t just fall asleep—I hurtle into it like a plane crashing into the ground, fading to black. I don’t wake up until I hear something. It sounds familiar. It’s a ringing sound. It’s that thing that makes you wake up. But where is it? “Jordan,” I hiss. “Huh?” she moans. She bolts upright and grabs her phone and stares at it. “This is new,” she whispers. “Make it stop!” I cry. The ringing continues. I realize it’s coming from my phone which is on the floor. I remember how to make it stop. It’s 6:45 am. I lay in exhausted torment until 7:15. Then 7:30. Then with every ounce of strength I can muster, I get my ass up and get to the excruciating business of getting my shit together and getting my shit together…( sayin’ wake up, ya need to make money!) At 8:10 Jordan and I are both in the car with a cup of coffee. You’re not hard core unless you live hard core, like Dewey Finn says.
I sail up 71 without incident. The coffee kicks in and I’m actually feeling pretty okay. At 9:49, I pull into the venue we are at for the day at work. Jordan’s car is safe and intact. I find a parking spot, wave to my friend, and tell Jordy to wake up.
She sits up, opens her eyes, retches, opens the door, and promptly vomits down the side of my car.
I squeal, then chant prayerfully: OMG PLEASE DO NOT PUKE IN FRONT OF MY CO-WORKERS!
I don’t even see her leave. She is gone, slinking away to her car, as I had practically pushed her out of a moving vehicle.
So. That’s my review of Twenty One Pilots and a little story thrown in to boot.
PS My foot doesn’t feel any better.
